Perfect for aspiring psychologists, the life of Milton Erickson and his hypnotic techniques are legendary, If you find Carl Jung fascinating, you need to read about Milton Erickson!

Milton H. Erickson, M.D. is generally acknowledged to have been the world's leading practitioner of medical hypnosis. His "strategic therapy," using hypnotic techniques with or without inducing trance, allows him to get directly to the core of a problem and prescribe a course of action that can lead to rapid recovery.

This book provides a comprehensive look at Dr. Erickson's theories in practice, through a series of case studies covering the kinds of problems that are likely to occur at various stages of the human life cycle. The results Dr. Erickson achieves sometimes seem to border on the miraculous, but they are brought about by a finely honed technique used by a wise, intuitive, highly trained psychiatrist-hypnotist whose work is recognized as a major contribution to the field.

More About Milton Ericson:

Therapy techniques

Erickson revolutionized therapy by making it more direct and solution-focused, and by developing clinical hypnosis and hypnotherapy. He believed that unconscious communication between therapist and client was more important than conscious communication. Erikson used observations in body language and testing new ideas of inducing trance, creating a toolkit of inductions. Including ways to occupy, confuse or shock the conscious mind allowing access to the subconscious. Many of Milton's techniques can be thought of as useful in "conversational hypnosis" or even "covert hypnosis"

Therapy models

Erickson's therapy techniques moved away from the lengthy, theory-driven practices of pioneers like Freud, Jung, and Adler. Erickson is widely regarded as the “father of hypnotherapy”. His discoveries have influenced a wide spectrum of therapy from strategic family therapy to neuro-linguistic programming.

Unconscious thought processes

Erickson was fascinated by unconscious thought processes and believed that people were always communicating unconsciously. Using his body language observations from when he was a child bedridden by polio, Milton experimented, seeing if he could engage in dialogue with a person’s subconscious, while the person was fully awake but unaware.

Removing stigma

Erickson helped to remove the stigma that surrounded hypnosis as a legitimate form of therapy. Suffering from the pain caused by polio, Milton found what worked and used his own techniques to manage and overcome his own health issues and ongoing pain. using these same techniques to teach and show others how to control their pain.

  • How book quality is graded:

    • New - brand new and never owned.
    • As-New - with extremely little signs of use, no blemishes. This includes 'mint' condition vintage books with no sign of use.
    • Excellent - minor signs of use, may be almost 'as-new' except for a single scratch, small tear or scuff. A healthy firm spine, pages are still well aligned. Excellent vintage books will have more signs of ware than recently published books.
    • Great - very obvious signs of use, may have a single bent page or a some cover fading. Spine is still strong, but pages may not all line up perfectly when book is closed.
    • Unsellable - books that I don't bother purchasing for resale and will not appear on this store; many bent torn or folded pages, great sign of wear, stains on pages, sticky/stuck pages, large tears, weak spine and/or lose pages destroyed front/back cover.

Some tanning or darkening of vintage book pages is not considered a sign of poor condition, this is an attribute of all aging books, just like the nostalgic 'old book smell.'
